Firefox 3.6 & Windows 7: Superbar

For years, I used Internet Explorer (IE) as my only browser. I never understood what others were saying about it. Maybe I was oblivious to the issues IE has or maybe I never encountered them.

I’d tried other browsers but couldn’t get comfortable with one, and thus ended up back with IE.

Nearly two years ago, after moving to a new company, I was tempted to try Firefox once again, and haven’t looked back since. I still use IE for the occasional website that allows multiple uploads (for example) rather than a one-by-one process. My main reason for sticking was Foxmarks (now called Xmarks). I had lots of favourites from IE that I had made at my previous job, and wanted them here.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, Firefox became my main browser and I slowly discovered several other must-have add-ons (Feedly for example – I’ll leave the rest for another post!). Towards the end of last year I moved to Google Chrome as my main browser, but Firefox is always there and with Xmarks, I can sync my bookmarks to them both.

Firefox 3.6 has just been released and with it comes a new cool feature. When in Windows 7 you can utilise the Aero Peek feature to see any open tabs within Firefox.

To enable this do the following:

  1. In the address bar type about:config

  2. You may get a warning about these settings… just continue

  3. Find the entry browser.taskbar.previews.enable (you can type it into the filter box)

  4. Double click the entry to toggle the setting between true and false (mine was set to false by default).

  5. Move your mouse to the Firefox icon on the taskbar and in the Aero Peek window that appears, hover over the tabs to see them.

Enjoy!

Neil
